Last night Kevin Spenst and I launched our Anvil Press poetry titles. Kevin’s excellent second book, Ignite, is a skillful investigation into the repercussions of schizophrenia in his dad’s life. I have known Kevin since he began working with Thursdays Writing Collective in 2009 as a founder of our Editing Collective. Last year he visited to read from his debut Jabbering with Bing Bong. He’s a great reader. He brought the fire. I brought the…ice.
Last week Kevin had a mini stroke and we are all relieved he is well. We were playing the launch by ear until the moment we stood at the mic. It was fantastic to hear him in full throttle with the crowd in his thrawl.
Kevin’s partner Tawny Darbyshire made this incredible cake with fondant representations of our book covers.
Dina del Bucchia jumped into the instantaneous role of MC. Here she is winning at the amazing Dress Like a Book challenge.
I tried to Dress Like a Book (orange loop pin, dress of a repeating three-circle pattern) but I concede to Dina. My sister Rhys did a superb job, though.
I was so happy to see so many friends. including Peter Quatermain, photobomber extraordinaire.
Robert made a guest book for everyone to sign. Here are the before and after shots:
It was a fantastic night and a beautiful beginning to the book tour! Incredibly enough, the Anvil Press team had to run out to get more copies during the launch. Thanks to everyone who contributed to such a memorable night.
